Charles Martin Powell (1775-1824):
Born in Chichester, Charles Martin Powell was a self taught artist who at one time was a sailor. He worked in the tradition of the Dutch marine painters of the seventeenth century, notably the van der Veldes who were to have such a strong influence upon the British school of marine painting in the eighteenth century. He was capable to of some very fine work and produced some ambitious historical subjects. Sadly, however, he died in poverty in 1824 leaving a wife and eight children. He exhibited in London between 1807 and 1821 at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution between 1813 and 1821. Collections: National Maritime Museum, Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead.
