Dorothea Sharp RBA, ROI (1874-1955). :
Born in Dartford, Kent, in 1874 Dorothea Sharp took up painting at the age of twenty-one and studied in London where her teachers included David Murray and George Clausen. She also studied in Paris under Castaluchio who set her on the path to success. The French Impressionists and in particular Monet had a profound and lasting influence upon her style and she became best known for her freely painted beach scenes, notably including children bathed in strong sunlight. She was a member of the Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Society of Woman Artists. She lived in London working from a studio in Maida Vale and in 192's and 1930's travelled in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. From 1940 to 1946 she lived in St Ives, Cornwall.
