The Boy Jesus in the Temple.
Oil and gold on copper.
6 7/8 x 8 5/8 inches.
Latin inscription in gold "..quid est quod me quaerebatis" (how is it that you were seeking me). Luke Chapter 2 verse 49.
The Latin inscription refers to the episode in the Temple when Jesus was twelve years old. His parents had taken him to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When the festival was over, they started their journey home but were unaware that Jesus had stayed behind in Jerusalem. After searching for him for three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." Jesus replied "Why were you searching for me? Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?". But they did not understand.
