|Mary Mostyn Clarke (late 19th century)|
Grouville Common towards Mont Orgueil.
Oil on canvas
12 x 24 inches
Signed with the artist's monogram and dated 1899.
Occasionally we come across a view of Jersey that has been off the island for many years as in the case of this late 19th century oil painting by Mary Mostyn Clarke. This wonderful view of Grouville Common towards Mont Orgueil came from a small collection of the artist's work found in a vicarage in Somerset and was believed to have been there for many years.
It is one of Colette's favourite images of Jersey showing Fort Henry and Mont Orgueil beyond what is now the Royal Jersey Golf course.
Mary Mostyn Clarke (late 19th century):
Mary Mostyn Clarke was a little known Liverpool painter who was related to, and possibly the sister of, the artist Tom Mostyn (1864-1930). She originally painted under the name of Mostyn but later added her married name.
