David Ghilchik ROI (1892-1974):
Born in Romania in 1892, the painter and draughtsman David Ghilchik studied at Manchester School of Art 1907-15 and then in London at the Slade School of Fine Art under Ambrose McEvoy and Henry Tonks. He settled in London and was a member of the London Sketch Club. Between the wars he contributed to Punch and Daily Sketch magazines. Ghilchik exhibited widely including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, New English Art Club, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. His oil paintings are similar in style to those of Christopher Wood and are admired for their breezy freshness.
