Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979).:
Born in the Ukraine, the famous Russian painter and textile designer Sonia Delaunay was brought up in St Petersburg. She studied art in Karlsruhe in 1903-4 and came to Paris in 1905. Born Sonia Terk she was briefly married to a German art critic before she met the French painter Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) whom she married in 1910. She continued to paint although increasingly turned to design and readily embraced abstraction. She developed a Delaunay style called simultaneist which was concerned with the interaction of forms and colours suggestive of movement. She worked as a designer for the theatre in Madrid and with Robert for the Ballet Russes. In Paris she was celebrated for her dynamic textile designs which were applied to carpets, scarves and dresses and even, on one occasion, to a car. She made no distinction between the major and minor arts, between decorative and fine art. It was only after Robert’s death in 1941 that she emerged fully as a painter and became well known for her large powerful canvasses. Among numerous honours she was the first woman whose work was shown in the Louvre during her lifetime. Collections: worldwide.
