James Townshend RBA (c.1880-1949):
Landscape, figure and portrait painter, James Townshend was educated in London and Paris where his teachers were Adolphe Bouguereau and Carolus Duran. He often included a narrative element in his work, notable examples being Christmas Eve in Shakespeare's Country and The Village Tuck Shop. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1897 and was also a member of the Royal Drawing Society. He exhibited on numerous occasions in London at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and elsewhere.
