John William Gilroy (1868-1944):
Landscape, marine, portrait and genre painter in oil and watercolour, John William Gilroy was born in Newcastle in 1868 and was a self taught artist. He practised in Newcastle until the 1920's when he moved to Whitley Bay. He exhibited at the Berwick Club, Newcastle, Royal Academy and at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle. Collections: North Tyneside Council; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; South Shields Museum & Art Gallery; Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear.
